Cornhole

Last Toss Cemetery

Iron gates, a crooked manor, and something under the dirt that wants your bag.

Last Toss Cemetery, seen from the throwing line

Where you are

Last Toss Cemetery, at night, through the iron gates. The lane runs up a flagstone path lined with jack-o’-lanterns, past the board the earth of the newest graves is freshly turned, the gravedigger’s spade still standing in one, and a little crypt keeps watch beside it. Beyond the ruined wall a crooked manor and its tower stand against a huge moon. Here for Halloween only.

What happens here

  • Throw long and a zombie hand bursts out of the earth beyond your bag, slams down on it, grabs it and drags it back down its hole. Now and then two come up and fight over it, and the loser shakes its fist as it sinks. And a ghost usually turns up to laugh at it.
  • A cornhole lights the big jack-o’-lantern on the wall, or sends bats bursting out of the hole. Two in a row, both, an organ, and the manor up the hill wakes, its windows opening as eyes to stare down at the board. Three, and its bell tolls.
  • A woody sends bats darting off the board, drops a spider on its thread over it, or creaks the crypt’s door open on two glowing eyes that stare at the board, and slams it.
  • A bag in the dirt and a ghost turns up to cackle at it. Get all four in and every ghost comes out to wave.
  • Now and then a faint ghost drifts across behind the board. The crow starts up at the hand and the bats, and between throws the lanterns flicker, will-o’-wisps wander, bats circle the moon, and now and then something blinks in the crypt’s dark doorway. And once in a while, early on, the whole manor wakes up laughing.
